Portfolio:
Here is a showcase of some of my work. I have over 3 years continuous commercial experience working in web page design edinburgh. The projects I've worked on have ranged from full-blown e-commerce solutions, highly successful webcam and forum sites to small, friendly homepages for small businesses and organisations, all being business focused website design.
disQworld
The premier blank media discussions on the net, disQworld has only been established for a few months but is already rapidly becoming the busiest and most respected website in it's field.
disQworld

Powered by phpBB, a GPL source of PHP bulletin board software, this site uses PHP to connect to a MySQL database. Part of the creation of this site involved setting up a new dedicated server running Apache on Red Hat Linux.

As the webmaster I thus have experience of configuring Apache and using MySQL through the command line and through phpMyAdmin.

The 3 Sisters
The 3 Sisters is one of Edinburgh's most popular pubs. To compliment their success as a thriving pub, nightclub, restaurant and hotel they wanted a site that was cool, fun, groovy and sexy. Yeah baby.
The 3 Sisters

This site was created as part of a MarketSpan collaboration.

The site comprises elements of Flash, dHTML and PHP. My role in it's development encompassed putting together the initial design, coding up the templates and rolling out the final site.

DVD Recordable
The internet's premiere resource for recordable DVD hardware reviews and news. DVD-Recordable's aim is to provide no-nonsense articles, reports and guides on DVD recording, ripping, authoring and backup,

Powered by phpBB, a GPL source of PHP 'blog' software, this site uses PHP to connect to a MySQL database. As with disQworld, part of the creation of this site involved setting up a new dedicated server running Apache on Red Hat Linux.

Property Homefinder
PropertyHomefinder offer a service which searches hundreds of homes on a daily basis to find properties tailored to the individual needs of prospective home buyers and renters.
Property Homefinder

This is a small and simple dHTML website.

To quote the website owner, "The website's looking great, thank you for all the work you've done."

I marketed this website using serach engine submission techniques. Please feel free to perform a search for "properties in Edinburgh" in Google.com and Yahoo.com. On the site's launch the website was sitting in second place in both listings.

01ne
01ne make top of the range blank media (CD's and DVD's).
01ne

Another relatively small and simple site which uses some Flash and dHTML.

Kerrowdown Mill
A tasteful conversion of old stone farm buildings has formed 6 comfortable cottages each enjoying the benefits of modern facilities, yet retaining all their original character. These cottages can be found in Drumnadrochit - not a million miles from the Benleva - see below.
Kerrowdown

Another small but effective site. Again, the owners were 'very pleased' with the site.

Benleva Hotel
The Benleva is a small and friendly hotel in Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness. The hotel offers a range of comfortable en-suite bedrooms including a family room and a four-poster double bedroom, all with excellent views.
benleva.co.uk

Still one of my favourite sites, the Benleva Hotel website was created using dHTML with some PHP scripts connecting to two MySql databases to create a photo gallery and guestbook.

Quotes from the guestbook: "I LOVE THIS SITE." MUGU JOE, LAGOS, NAIJA.

"What a great site, greetings from Bali", Sarmi (Bali - Indonesia).

Silicon Group
The Silicon Group specialise in providing computer-buying customers with help at every stage of the PC buying and upgrading process. Their dedicated team of technicians provide an excellent service, both to owners of Silicon PCs and to ones that are bought elsewhere.
silicon-group.co.uk

This site was developed using Actinic Catalog to provide an easy to use backend to a retail database. Actinic provide a set of templates using Perl and dHTML to connect a website to back-office applications like stock control, monitoring and invoicing on an Access RDBMS. The Silicon Group website also uses dHTML, a perl form to email cgi and a java applet to create a scrolling news ticker.

Whitelabel Media
Whitelabel make the best quality value-for-money blank media available. Products include cd-r and the new Generation 3 dvd-r.
whitelabel-media.com

This is a simple 2 page website - one to show off the products and the other to contact the company through.

Enet Distribution
Enet are Scotland's largest distributors of digital media. They offer you the best service in blank media distribution you will ever find!!!
e-netdistribution.co.uk

This website was created using dHTML and a perl cgi form to email cgi and a java applet to create a scrolling news ticker.

CamVista
25,000 unique visitors a day, coming from all around the world, make Camvista one of britains most successful websites. People are drawn to the many wonderful webcams on the site that are presented in a busy but easy to use front end.
camvista.com

In a previous existence I was the the webmaster for the commercial arm of Camvista as represented by their flagship website camvista.com.

I am responsible for this site and that includes:

  • maintaining the site in terms of design and structure
  • developing new and sexy applications - mainly using PHP combined with dHTML (JavaScript and CSS)
  • developing more robust dynamic content through PHP and our relational db in MYSQL

Since taking on this role traffic for the site has increased from under 15,000 to over 25,000. See stats screenshots.

iwant2b
iwant2b is a dream waiting to happen. The concept of the site is to be a portal to the best websites there are for a given area, eg the ten best websites for buying holidays are at iwant2btravelling. Money has yet to materialise but the website is still there.
iwant2b.com

When I started working for iwant2b (and when I left) I was the only programmer there. Apart from some of the graphic design elements (which were created by a genius Ukrainian called Slava Rode) I was soley in charge of its technical implementation. I learned a lot on this project, including:

  • how to build quickly, effective and lean HTML pages in Dreamweaver.
  • how to create and edit graphic design elements in Photoshop
  • the principles of online marketing, from metas to the use of content and links to boost search engine ratings
